Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is a natural meroterpene that is extracted from the seed of the traditional ayurvedic medicinal plant Babchi (Psoralea Corylifolia) in a CO2-based, solvent-free process. It has retinol-like effects on gene expression and on the skin.

Natural alternative to retinol

Retinoids are successfully used for the treatment of fine wrinkles, acne, skin redness (dyschromia) and hyperpigmentation (melasma). However, retinoic acid and retinol can cause side effects like burning, dryness and skin irritation. Bakuchiol has a similar effect on the gene expression like retinoids. Among others, it upregulates genes involved in keeping the extracellular matrix (ECM) and dermo epidermal junction (DEJ) intact and functioning. It stimulates the synthesis of collagen, elastin and hyaluronan that are all essential for skin elasticity and hydration. In addition, Bakuchiol activates antioxidant pathways and act itself as a quencher of free radicals. Thus, it very efficiently inhibits lipid peroxidation, which is prime mechanism of photo-ageing, but is also involved in the genesis of acne. Finally, by downregulating pro-inflammatory and inducing anti-inflammatory genes Bakuchiol helps to prevent inflammation of the skin.

Scientifically proven effect on the skin

In one clinical study, Bakuchiol showed a significant decrease in wrinkle depth after 8 weeks and significant improvement of skin smoothness and moisture content after 4 weeks of treatment. In another study with subjects suffering from acne vulgaris, it significantly reduced the number of inflammatory lesions and improved post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Bakuchiol is available with a purity of 90% or 98%. The recommended dosage is around 0.5% to 1.0% in the finished formulation. Bakuchiol is a brownish, viscous oil that is soluble in ethanol and methanol and miscible with typical lipophilic cosmetic ingredients like plant oils and medium chain triglycerides. Temperatures above 60 °C should be avoided during the manufacturing process.
