Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) is a very popular binder and diluent in tablet and capsule formulations due to its excellent compressibility, stability and safety. Moreover, it is used as an adsorbent and bulking agent in cosmetic and food products. With our two grades of MCC, both PARMCEL 101 and PARMCEL 102 meet all the needs of formulations of oral solid dosage forms.

PARMCEL is a purified, partially depolymerised cellulose produced from α-cellulose treated with mineral acids and subsequent micronisation and size fractionation. It is chemically identical to native cellulose, but differs in particle size and crystallinity due to the physical and chemical treatments. MCC is widely used in oral pharmaceutical and food products and can be considered as very safe. After oral consumption, it is neither absorbed nor digested.

When used as binder and diluent in tablet formulation, it undergoes plastic deformation under pressure leading to hydrogen bonds between adjacent cellulose molecules. Tablets made with PARMCEL exhibit a very high tensile strength at even low compression forces, thus potentially reducing the wear on tableting tools. Despite forming hard tablets, PARMCEL does not affect the disintegration time. Due to the hydrophilic nature of cellulose, aqueous pores are formed after contact with water and leads to the disintegration of the tablet. Adding small amounts of hydrophilic surfactants such as polysorbate 80 or sodium dodecyl sulphate can enhance the disintegration effect. An additional disintegrant in the tablet formulation is not generally required when PARMCEL is used as binder or filler. In combination with magnesium stearate, long mixing times of the powder blend might lead to a deterioration of the disintegration time. However, addition of a disintegrant such as ULTRAMYL will counteract this effect and can lead to very fast releasing tablets.

PARMCEL is very stable when stored in an airtight container at room temperature and it is adequate reanalyse only the moisture content after a period of four years.

PARMCEL 101

PARMCEL 101 is especially suitable as binder and diluent in a wet granulation process or as binder in extrusion/spheronisation and roller compaction processes. It shows a very high compactability and plastic deformation. During wet granulation, the improved surface structure and particle size leads to a uniform distribution of the granulation liquid, contributing to a uniform granulation process and final dosage form. PARMCEL 101 has a smaller mean particle size compared to PARMCEL 102.

PARMCEL 102

PARMCEL 102 is a binder and diluent with excellent flowability and compactibility for direct compression. Its particle size is bigger compared to PARMCEL 101. Compared to the other binders for direct compression, excellent tensile strength is achievable in tablets with high drug load when using PARMCEL 102.
